Way back in middle school (8th grade?) art class, I created a “pop art” piece, a hamburger, and it was showcased in our school art display case and then entered, by my art teacher, in an art show. Pretty sure I was not counted as a winner or even placer in that show - but it was a big win for me as it was the beginning of my love for clay. As a pastor and chaplain, clay became an important part of my self care. I found peace and joy in learning and honing my wheel skills. So, to maintain balance in my life, I found myself “escaping” to the local pottery studio. There, the peace and joy returned as I focused on the rhythm and the calm of the wheel as the clay took shape in my hands. At first, this was a totally self-care process, a place of escape to find some peace. As I began to create pieces I could use everyday, I found joy and sacredness in the everyday rituals of life as I used those handmade pieces. I took time to pause and take notice of the feel of a mug in my hand, the warmth and taste of the coffee, the peace of the morning, the joy of my family gathering around the table, together, for a meal. Today, clay continues to be a part of my everyday self care practice, though its place in my life has expanded to include teaching and leading grief bowl workshops. I find great joy and fulfillment in helping others discover peace, healing, and joy through working with clay. my hope is that whether you have a piece of my pottery in your home or choose to join me in a class or workshop, you feel the joy with which each experience and piece is created - and perhaps be reminded to pause, notice, and discover a little beauty and sacredness in your everyday. After all, sometimes it really is a good day for pottery.
